Rapper A1 Lil Tony (real name Antonio Harper, Jr.) was killed in a shooting on May 1, 2018, leaving behind a growing fan base on social media. According to ABC News affiliate WJLA, A1 Lil Tony was walking toward his mother’s apartment complex in Waldorf, Md., around 10 p.m., when he was approached by a gunman and shot several times. Police reportedly believe Harper was targeted; the person he was accompanied by was left unharmed. It was initially reported that Knockerz had a heart attack induced by a codeine syrup overdose. According to sources who spoke to TMZ, on the evening of April 2, 2021, DMX overdosed on drugs and suffered a heart attack. Paramedics were called to the rapper’s home, and it took around 30 minutes to resuscitate, meaning DMX’s brain didn’t get any oxygen for that entire time, which can often lead to severe brain damage and brain death.

His problems weren’t asthma-related, however — doctors diagnosed the formerly sturdy but noticeably slight rapper with AIDS. Ten days later, complications from the horrific disease took his life. A foundation of rap, Spicer and his music influenced such legendary artists rappers who died from drugs as 2Pac, the Wu-Tang Clan, LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes, and more. Beastie Boys’ Ad-Rock told Rolling Stone that when the group “first started trying rap, I used to just do the first 16 bars of” Spicer’s famous song.
Rappers who died due to drug overdose: Lil Peep to Juice Wrld, a look at lost stars as DMX battles for life
Last month Peep was found unresponsive in his tour bus ahead of a scheduled show in Tucson, Arizona. According to a toxicology report conducted by the Pima County Medical Examiner, he died of an overdose as a result of “combined toxic effects of fentanyl and alprazolam Xanax.” It said that the “manner of death” was “accidental”. Use and abuse is growing in the UK also, where benzos are less readily available on prescription but sourced on the street or from the dark web and used by people to help bring them down after nights on other drugs they’ve taken. Though abuse isn’t on the level of the US, 366 people were killed by benzo-related overdoses in 2015 in the UK (compared with 9,000 in the US) – but that’s still higher than cocaine, speed, or MDMA.

- “Fentanyl is much cheaper to make and easier to smuggle because small amounts are very powerful. Many who overdose have no idea the substances they are taking include fentanyl.”
This genre’s ambient beats are characterised by an unpolished lo-fi sound, dominated by heavily distorted bass, and its artists’ punk rock personas and emotional lyrics that constantly reference suicide and prescription painkillers. This style of music is not only circulating on the platform but has entered the realm of mainstream record-label-vouched chart-topping music. In 2021, DMX’s death was attributed to a heart attack triggered by a drug overdose, though the specifics were not publicly detailed.
