Santa Clara County, CA — Santa Clara County is gearing up for its 17th Annual Binational Health Week 2021, which has grown from one week to an entire month of activities focused on the health of Latinos in our community.
Binational Health Week will kick off with a free health fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 2, at the Blanca Alvarado Community Resource Center, 408 N. Capitol Ave. San Jose. The fair will provide COVID-19 vaccinations, flu shots, health exams, and an opportunity to win prizes.
Throughout October, federal, state, and local government agencies, community-based organizations, and thousands of volunteers will come together to promote health through education activities. For a list of all the events in Santa Clara County, visit sccBHW.org.
“Through partnerships of many kinds, Binational Health week helps connect people to important health services,” said Dr. Sara Cody, Health Officer for the County of Santa Clara and Director of the Public Health Department. “The COVID pandemic has underscored how many people, including in the Latinx community, may have more limited access to medical care and bear a disproportionate burden of illness. We will continue to work together to ensure that everyone who needs health services can access them.”
The events are coordinated by a collaboration among community partners and government agencies from the U.S. and Mexico, including the Mexican Consulate in San Jose and the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department.
Ambassador Alejandra Bologna Zubikarai, Cónsul General de México en San José, said:
“The objective of Binational Health Week is to mobilize community clinics and organizations to offer their services, promote disease prevention and health promotion activities designed for migrants and their families, and provide information to underserved families in the United States about available health resources and services in our language.”
Binational Health Week was created in 2001 with the objective of raising awareness and responding to the unique health care challenges of Latinos living in the United States and Canada. Since its inception, BHW has evolved into one of the largest mobilization efforts in the Americas to improve the health and well-being of the underserved Latino population.
Last year, the County’s Binational Health Week reached nearly 35,000 individuals through 18 events produced by more than 200 volunteers and 40-plus partnering agencies. Since 2005, collective efforts have reached 478,260 individuals in the County.
